About the Design:
If you know me, you know l'm a language nerd.
Language is what connects us to our ancestors, to the land we're on and to those around us. It's so important we learn the language of the land we are a part of, and so l set out to design shirts that can educate
'Kingstonians' about the name of this beautiful place we are blessed to call home...
Katarokwi or Cataraqui.
... if you've lived in Kingston for very long you've likely wondered what it means or where the name came from.
The Kanien:keha (Mohawk) "Ken'tarókwi" roughly translates to "clay taken out of the water".
The Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) "Gaadanokwii" roughly translates to "a great meeting place".
So now you know!
When someone asks you, share these translations and know that you are helping the survivance of the Indigenous languages of the original and continuing stewards of this land you and I lovingly call home, the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabeg.
